Why we started Kashelo.

I'm Musthafa. I live in Dubai, I work in sales, and for years I logged every single thing I spent money on.

The water bottle

Not just rent and groceries. Every coffee. Every Careem ride. Every bottle of water from the corner shop. I used a simple Android expense app and opened it every day without fail.

I was proud of that habit. My records were perfect. I could tell you what I spent on a Tuesday six months ago.

Counting isn't helping

Then one month I looked at the screen and realised the app had never told me anything. It showed me a list and a total. It never said "you're spending too much on delivery" or "this week is worse than last week" or "here's what to cut".

I had years of data and zero advice. All that effort, and the app just counted.

I wanted something I could talk to. Something that looks at my numbers and tells me the truth, plainly, like a friend who has seen my bank statement and isn't impressed. And I didn't want to spend ten minutes a day typing to get there.

Why the UAE

Look around Dubai. Millions of people earn here, and a huge number of them send money home every month. Plenty are freelancers, drivers, sales people on commission. Pay comes in uneven amounts. Money is tight enough that you check your balance before you order food.

The money apps built in the US and Europe don't fit that life. They assume a fixed salary, they treat every transfer as spending, and many expect you to connect your bank, which isn't how things work here yet.

So we're building for the UAE first. Receipts, bank SMS and statements instead of bank logins. Remittances treated with respect. Advice that understands a payout cycle, not just a calendar month.

From Daftar to Kashelo

The app started life with the working name Daftar, the old word for a ledger book that merchants across our region kept for centuries. That's still the spirit: an honest record of where money goes.

But we want to grow beyond one region, so we picked a name that travels. Kashelo. Gold, green and a coin, because it's about your cash and keeping more of it.

   Google or email login, payment-caught notifications and your weekly read.

   Google Play launch

   Kashelo goes live for everyone in the UAE. The rest of the world after that.
